Professional work

The Division of Surgery of Izola General Hospital is modern and comparable to departments of this type in Slovenia and abroad. It provides 93 beds in General Surgery and 12 beds in Otorhinoloaryngology and Optometry.

Annually, more than 47,000 outpatients and 5,000 inpatients are treated. Last year, we performed surgery on 3,300 patients, partly also in the day hospital. The length of stay was steadily lowering in previous years and currently stands at 4.1 days and is one of the lowest in Slovenia. We have at our disposal modern CT and MR diagnostics and well-established consilium or advisory body where experts from various disciplines seek the best and most appropriate method of treatment for an individual patient, taking into account their particularities and aspirations. In modern operating theatres, even the most demanding interventions are performed relying on good cooperation with anaesthetists and intensivists.

Such a large volume of work requires high motivation and consistent professionalism. The latter is reflected in the established consilia and their regular meetings (regarding patients with abdominal and vascular pathology), other regular meetings where morbidity and mortality are addressed, as well as in regular reporting on the novelties presented at congresses, and findings from the literature. Many activities in the surgical department are beyond our hospital context. The traumatologists take part in the European registry of severe injuries with their above-average results. They also organize annual seminars of the Traumatology Society of Slovenian Istria and Karst with numerous participants, and are holders of the ATLS training programme, as well as they actively participate in a number of conferences at home and abroad. Abdominal surgeons are involved in the Slovenian system of monitoring the quality of gallstone surgery through which they have already received official recognitions. They were also the holders of the so called first “Surgical Evenings” in IGH and numerous lectures at national and international congresses. Vascular surgeons are involved in one of the most important studies in the field of treatment of carotid disease (ACST-2). In 2011, they co-organized an international meeting of the Adriatic Vascular Summit in Portorož, and the annual meeting “Learning about cardiovascular disease” in Koper. Paediatric Surgery was the host of the annual meeting of the Society of Paediatric Surgery in Strunjan. The Surgery Department is also engaged in cross-border projects – as the lead partner in the INTEGRAID project (run by assistant Peter Golob, MD) and as the associated partner in the PANGEA and E-SURGERY NET projects. High-level professional engagement is also reflected in the fact that seven surgeons are enrolled in doctoral studies. There are also many publications of our surgeons in domestic and foreign literature, most recently in August 2012 in the most important European journal in the field of vascular surgery.

The work of surgeons is, of course, only a link in the chain within which nurses and other medical and non-medical co-workers are indispensable. We firmly believe that the success of treatment depends on the consistency of the whole team, so we are trying to introduce new knowledge in all areas, and the same time we are aware that sometimes small things can make a day of a patient and accelerate their recovery. It is our vision to develop a modern surgical centre where patients can be offered fast, effective and modern professional care, taking into account the peculiarities and preferences of each individual.
